A practice of paying attention
Sarah Bland’s Mindfulness Meditation for the High School Classroom is a 27-page PDF for educators who want to introduce short, guided practices. The ebook brings together 24 meditation scripts, guidance for supporting student choice, and reflection prompts for your own practice. Each classroom practice is designed for two to four minutes.
A few minutes before a lesson can become time to notice your breath, listen to the room, or feel your feet on the ground. Start with your own experience. Then invite your students to explore what they notice, with care and curiosity.
“A contemplative practice is essential to a sustainable life as a transformative educator because it offers space for you to hear and listen to what your body and mind and spirit are communicating to you.”
Inside the guide
Mindfulness Meditation for the High School Classroom includes an introduction to mindfulness, guidance for instructors, 24 written practice scripts, and three teacher reflection pages. You can explore the approach, practice for yourself, and use the scripts to introduce short moments of mindful attention in your classroom.
Explore what it means to pay attention to your experience with care, curiosity, and kindness. The opening pages connect mindfulness with teaching, student agency, and the conditions in which we learn and create.
Read Sarah’s suggestions for introducing the practice, inviting a comfortable posture, and responding to reluctance. Sample language helps you open and close a practice while respecting students’ choices.
Written practices explore breathing, listening, gratitude, body awareness, self-compassion, visualization, and loving kindness. Each offers words you can use to guide attention, with pauses included throughout.
Three reflection pages invite you to notice your inner experience. Return to your breath, patterns of tension, the postures you feel drawn to, and how you move through the teaching day.
A look at the practices
The guide’s 24 practices offer different ways to bring attention to breath, body, thoughts, and the world around you. Begin with mindful breathing, explore a body scan, or choose an invitation to gratitude or self-compassion. These six examples give you a sense of the range.
Notice the pace, temperature, and depth of your breath, with an invitation to deepen it if that feels comfortable.
Attend to the sounds within yourself, around the classroom, and beyond it.
Move your attention through your body, noticing tension, ease, and areas of little sensation.
Bring to mind a place in nature and notice its sounds, light, and other details.
Listen for what you might need in the present moment, without needing to arrive at an answer.
Practice offering care to yourself, someone you love, and other people.

Care, curiosity, and choice
Sarah’s classroom approach centers care, community, respect, curiosity, and co-creation. Students can choose a posture that works for them, keep their eyes open, or abstain from practicing. The guide includes suggestions for responding to reluctance with kindness while maintaining boundaries that support the students who wish to participate.
The instructor guidance asks you to begin with your own practice. As you notice what mindfulness brings up for you, you can introduce it to students from your own experience.
For the whole educator
“It is essential that you explore your own practice before introducing this to the people in your classroom.”
Sarah Bland, from the introduction
The reflection pages give you questions to return to. What patterns of tension do you notice as you pay attention to your breath? Which meditation posture are you drawn to? What happens when you slow down during an ordinary action in your day?
Bring these questions into your own writing and reflection, paying attention to what you notice before deciding what it means.
